Can a good diet help cancer victim?

Breast cancer has only very tenuous links with diet (hereditary factors play a far bigger role), so your sister-in-law shouldn¹t torture herself with the thought that she might have escaped the disease had she eaten better.

However being overweight, drinking too much alcohol and eating too few vegetables are thought to play a part, so these are areas she could still usefully tackle if they apply to her.

Most important is eating a nutritious diet that will equip her with a strengthened immune system for any treatment she has to undergo. There's no magic formula here - just simple wholesome foods that are as unprocessed as possible.

These should include plenty of whole grains and pulses, a couple of servings of low fat protein (preferably fish ad chicken) daily and two servings of low fat dairy products.

Most importantly she should significantly increase her intake of fruit and vegetables to 5-9 portions, with one portion counting as two tablespoon of vegetables, a bowl of salad, one apple-sized piece of fruit, a tablespoon of dried fruit or a glass of fruit juice.

If possible she should choose the more colourful fruits and vegetables, like peppers, carrots, mangoes and spinach which are highest in immune-boosting antioxidants.

There are a number of fairly extreme or faddy diet regimens recommended to beat cancer, but I don¹t recommend your sister-in-law tries them. There¹s no evidence that extreme measure help, and many such diets overlook the enjoyment factor of food.

It's important that the diet she eats she feels comfortable with because it¹s bad enough having to cope with cancer without having to adhere to strict and boring food rules too.
