Can I diet while breast-feeding?

I understand your desperation to lose weight, but whilst you are still breast-feeding I would counsel against going on a Slim Fast diet.

Your body can happily use it's fat stores to get the 500 calories or so extra per day it requires to make milk, but that won't supply the extra vitamins and minerals you need - which is why the general advice is that you musn't skimp on food.

Having said this if you do plan your diet very carefully it is possible to eat only around 1500-2000 calories a day (enough to lose a pound a week) and still get all the nutrients you and your baby need. But a Slim Fast diet is simply too low in calories and doesn't give you the fibre or important phytochemicals found in fruits and vegetables and grains.

If you are planning to lose weight, my advice would be to start the day with a fortified high fibre breakfast cereal and milk to get in as many of those essential vitamins and minerals early on. During the day you should then continue to eat regular low fat carbohydrate meals and snacks (e.g. bread, potatoes, dried fruit, cereal), supplemented with at least two-three servings of low fat protein (lean meat, poultry, fish, pulses).

Also make sure to pack in plenty of low calorie nutrition-packed fruit and vegetables, and a pint of skimmed milk every day. On top of this take a calcium supplement and a multivitamin.

Taken together, these steps should ensure you can lose a little weight safely when you are breast-feeding. But any more than a pound a week is undesirable as your body's priorities at the moment is feeding your baby, not losing pounds.
