Can I lose weight without dieting?
The problem with being 'on a diet' all the time is that it forces you to be preoccupied with food.
And fixating about what you can or can't eat simply makes you crave the 'wrong' foods all the more.
Many women find that the key to breaking out of this cycle is being much less restrained about what they eat. Not banning foods, and refraining from categorising then as 'good' or 'bad' is quite liberating and can break the hold they have over you.
Please don't be scared to give up dieting and adopt healthy eating instead. It's the way thousands of normal weight people keep the pounds from creeping on and it will work for you too, as it is something that fits into your lifestyle long term.
If you need help to re-educate your eating habits you could ask your doctor to be referred to a dietitian or see one privately. Contact the British Dietetic Association, 5th Floor Charles House, 148/9 Great Charles St Queensway, Birmingham B3 3HT for a dietician in your area or visit their website www.bda.uk.com.
But the essential guidelines are that you should make your diet approximately two-thirds fruit, vegetables and starchy carbohydrates and one third protein (lean meat, poultry or fish).
Every day you should also have two low-fat dairy servings such as skimmed milk or yoghurt. Fatty or sugary foods like chocolate, cake, biscuits, pudding and cream are not banned, but should be eaten in moderation.
If you haven't previously been very active I would also recommend half an hour's brisk walking every day - it will make a huge amount of difference to your mental well-being as well as your weight loss progress.
Let me also lay to rest one myth - though yo-yo dieting is psychologically destructive it doesn't permanently slow down your metabolism as is sometimes said.
So you haven't done your body any long term harm, and with the right approach you will be able to succeed in keeping the weight off.
