To combat water retention, a low sodium, high potassium diet is important - which you can achieve by eating fewer salty foods such as bacon, cheese, soups, ready meals, pizzas and savoury snacks, and more unprocessed foods including fruits and vegetables and whole grains.
Before a period, what appears to be water retention can also be caused by the bowels slowing down, which leads to bloating in the abdomen area. Eating a high fibre diet rich in whole grains and fruit and vegetables can help.
I would also recommend a diuretic herbal supplement, such as Medic Herb's Aqualette during the worst times of the month.
Some nutritionist also believe that water retention can be a sign of food intolerance. If you suspect this might be the case, try keeping a food diary to note down when your water retention occurs and the foods you have eaten at the same time or just before.
For more help read Allergy and Intolerance by Professor Jonathan Brostoff and Linda Gamlin (Bloomsbury, £6.99).
You can always follow up things further by seeking out a dietitian or nutritionist who specialises in intolerance.
To find one in your area, contact the British Dietetic Association, 5th Floor Charles House, 148/9 Great Charles St Queensway, Birmingham B3 3HT or visit their website on www.bda.uk.com.
Prolonged and severe fluid retention can be a symptom of heart, liver or kidney disease, so check with your GP if you are concerned.
