Breastfeeding: is it overrated?

The beneficial effects of breastfeeding on blood pressure later in life may have been overestimated, researchers have claimed.

Many studies published in recent years have reported significant differences in blood pressure between those people who were breast-fed and those given formula milk.

But researchers from St George's Hospital Medical School in London said many of these studies were conducted using relatively small samples, raising the possibility of bias in the results.

Their report, published in the British Medical Journal, follows conflicting debate about the effectiveness of breastfeeding in also reducing obesity in later life.

Researchers are split on whether mother's milk may help protect children against becoming overweight, compared with those who are bottle-fed.

In the latest study the team, led by epidemiologist Christopher Owen, reviewed 24 studies to find out whether breastfeeding was linked to lower blood pressure at different ages.

While smaller studies reported noticeable differences in blood pressure, larger pieces of research showed little change.

The researchers concluded: "Our analysis suggests that any effect of breast feeding on blood pressure is modest and of limited clinical or public health importance."

But they said blood pressure was not the only aspect of health that could be affected by breast feeding.

"The case for breastfeeding rests on a combination of short and long term benefits," they said.

"These include improved neural and psychosocial development, potential protection against obesity and allergic disease and lower blood cholesterol in later life."
