Ace ways to beat tennis elbow

With the tennis season getting into full swing, GPs and physios are bracing themselves for the annual rash of cases of tennis elbow. "We do see a lot of it," says Mandy Sergeant, tennis manager at the Harbour Club in Fulham.

"It usually results from a problem with people's technique, from gripping the racket too hard, or simply from not warming up properly."

As sufferers will know, the condition, which produces pain on the outside of the elbow joint (pain on the inside of the elbow joint is known as golfer's elbow), is not confined to sporty types. "The technical term for tennis elbow is lateral epicondylitis," says Dr Annabel Bentley, assistant medical director of Bupa (www.bupa.com).

"It is caused by inflammation of the muscles and tendons attached to the outside of the elbow joint and it affects people who repeatedly use wrist-turning movements which involve force and gripping - carpenters, gardeners, dentists, musicians and even politicians who do too much handshaking."

The condition needs treatment - as soon as possible. "The longer you leave it, the worse it can get," advises osteopath Simeon Niel-Asher of the Highgate Osteopathic Clinic (020 8347 6160). "If it becomes chronic, you may need steroid injections."
