Could colour cure your ills?
Most of us are attracted by certain colours, but have you ever considered why that should be?
According to a growing body of complementary therapists, our choices are more than just whim or coincidence.
Colour therapists believe our bodies need certain colours to improve our physical and mental well-being and we are all individually drawn towards the colours we are lacking at different times in our lives.
Sceptics may scoff at the idea. But there are more colour therapists in Britain than any other country in the world and the therapy is now being used to help sufferers of everything from depression and hyperactivity to autism and cancer.
Here is the femail.co.uk guide to colour therapy. You can also click on the link in the blue box above for our fun test to see which colours could help you!
What is colour therapy?
The theory behind colour therapy is that each colour in the spectrum has a different vibrational frequency. Therapists believe that all the cells in the body also have a frequency which resonate strongly and positively when we are healthy, but when we are ill or unhealthy this frequency becomes imbalanced.
The theory is that different parts of our bodies, different conditions and different emotional states respond better to different colours and when our bodies are out of balance we naturally seek the colour that our bodies crave.
The main colours that affect us are the rainbow hues of the colour spectrum - red, magenta, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, indigo and violet. The first four of these colours are thought to be the most stimulating colours, the last four more comforting and soothing. Violet, for example, is said to be good for soothing hormonal problems, orange is thought to stimulate the digestive system and green is thought to be good for the heart and lungs.
How does it work?
Therapists use a wide variety of methods to treat their patients. They include covering them in coloured scarves, shining coloured lights on different parts of their bodies, asking them to visualise certain colours, dabbing them with coloured oils or simply adding different coloured clothes to their wardrobes.
Scientific evidence to back up these theories is still very thin on the ground. However some studies have shown some interesting results. A study carried out in 1982 at the San Diego School of Nursing, for example, exposed 60 middle-aged women suffering from rheumatoid arthritis to blue for 15 minutes. They received significant pain relief.
In another study in 1990 flashing red lights were shone into the eyes of migraine sufferers at the start of an attack. Ninety-three per cent of patients had some relief from treatment. Therapists believe this is because the colour red increases blood pressure, opening up the blood vessels.
A growing number of parents are also having some excellent results using coloured light boxes called Lumatrons to treat children with problems ranging from autism to dyslexia and dyspraxia.
This technique, developed by an American neuroscientist, involves narrow bands of coloured light being used to enhance the light receptor cells (called rods and cones) at the back of the eyes in a series of 20 minute sessions, in order to rebalance the autonomic nervous system.
Joan Lewis, a 42-year-old nurse from Cambridge, was at her wits end with her five-year-old autistic son Ian when she heard about the Lumatron machine from a support group.
'We couldn't go anywhere or do anything with Ian - not even go on holiday - because he was so violent and disruptive,' she says. 'Just a few months after we started using the Lumatron box we really started to notice a difference and he is now a completely different child. I am convinced that this therapy has made a huge difference to his life.'
Not all colour therapists claim to treat conditions. Some aim their techniques at achieving a general improvement in a patient's emotional health.
Sue Shattock from New Approaches to Cancer, a nationwide support group for people with cancer, frequently uses colour therapy to support cancer sufferers.
'I ask patients what colours they are drawn to and then explain to patients that they can visualise different colours that they feel they need,' she says. 'Many find it a real comfort, particularly because it's something they can do for themselves.
'I don't claim to be able to treat cancer, this is purely a way of helping patients to achieve a better quality of life.'
