What to do when stress hits
We can't prevent an earthquake or stop Boeing from pulling up stakes in Seattle. But we can do something about the way we respond to these and other sources of stress in our lives.
Here are some of the strategies experts suggest:
• Take action. You'll feel more empowered, less helpless and scared. If you're still shaking from the last quake and worried about the next one, take steps to earthquake-proof your house or assemble a survival kit. If the economic downturn makes you nervous about your job, check out the job market and put together a résumé, just in case.
• Have a strategy for possible contingencies. Group Health psychologist Sherwin Cotler says the least traumatized people he saw after the earthquake were school kids who had practiced earthquake response, had a plan and carried it out.
• Be wary of harmful stress responses so you can avoid them. Some common ones: excessive drinking, smoking or eating; becoming irritable; isolating yourself from others.
Exercise. It's a great de-stressor.
• Interact with others. It can help diffuse anxieties.
• Remember Mom's advice: Get plenty of sleep and eat healthy foods.
• Try relaxing techniques. Among the possibilities: meditation, yoga, prayer, nature walks, music.
• Get help. If stress is gaining ground, seek help from someone experienced in working with distressed individuals - perhaps your doctor, clergyman or a professional counselor.
