Pros: Pears are not overly endowed with nutrients, but they do contain useful amounts of the antioxidant vitamins C and A, potassium and a small amount of vitamin E. They excel in their level of soluble fibre in the form of pectin. Pectin lowers cholesterol and helps regulate the digestive system, increasing its efficiency and improving the absorption of nutrients from food. US studies have revealed that pectin may protect us from pollution by binding itself to metals such as lead and carrying them safely out of the body. That pears are extremely easy to digest makes them suitable for convalescents, the elderly and children.
Cons: Canned pears lose about two-thirds of their vitamin C, though levels aren't very high to start with. The fibre content of canned fruits is lower than the fresh, unpeeled variety by nearly half, and their calorie count increases by about 25 per cent.
