Pros: For such a sweet dessert, pavlova has relatively pleasing vital statistics. At about 250 calories a slice, a raspberry-topped version is on a calorific par with fruit and ice cream, and provides at least 50 calories less than lemon meringue pie. By itself, meringue is virtually devoid of fat, so the final fat figure for the pavlova depends on how generous a serving of cream you choose. A 'normal dose' adds up to around one-fifth of the daily guideline fat intake for women. You can cut this amount by mixing in yoghurt, or using whipping cream instead of double. Upping the proportion of fruit and meringue to cream is another easy way to make sure you end up with a lower-fat dessert. Raspberries provide vitamin C for a healthy immune system, along with a smidgen of the antioxidant vitamin E (blackberries have more). Raspberries are also one of the best fresh fruit sources of fibre, necessary for a healthy digestive system.
Cons: Fresh fruit of any type is by far the healthiest topping for pavlova. A sticky toffee and nut version has almost twice the number of calories and provides no vitamin C or fibre. Pavlova's worst nutritional trait is its high sugar content. One serving provides around six level teaspoons, which is more than half the daily guideline of sugar intake for women. However, ending a meal with a sugary dessert is kinder to the teeth than eating it on its own between meals. It is also a good idea to follow pavlova with a small piece of cheese, as this helps to neutralise acids that can cause tooth decay.
