Pros: Traditional dried pasta is usually made from nothing but durum wheat and water. Fresh pasta - which is now widely available in supermarkets - often contains eggs, which slightly boosts its nutritional value, especially the protein and fat content. Pasta supplies a wealth of complex carbohydrates, fibre, B vitamins (especially folic acid), some vitamin A and E, minerals such as magnesium and calcium, and some health-preserving phytochemicals. Wholegrain versions are generally richer in vitamins and minerals than refined versions. For example, wholemeal spaghetti has 20 times the vitamin B1 (thiamin) content of white, and three times the amount of iron. Refining flour results in the removal of about 80 per cent of the magnesium and zinc content and almost all of the essential trace mineral, chromium. Because it contains two amino acids, tryptophan and L-phenylalanine, which produce feel-good hormones called endorphins, pasta is a brilliant food for people suffering from depression.
Cons: Pasta is only as fattening as the sauce that accompanies it. However, wholewheat pasta makes a much better alternative to its refined counterparts for people who are watching their weight. This is because the more refined the carbohydrate, the higher its glycaemic index, meaning your blood sugar will rise and fall more dramatically, leaving you hungrier sooner.
