Pros: Tuna in water is an excellent low-calorie, low-cholesterol way to get a good dose of omega-3 fatty acids - though it is not as good a source of them as other oily fish. These are essential to health, reducing high cholesterol levels and normalising elevated blood pressure, preventing the formation of blood clots, retarding the growth of cancerous tumours and helping brain and eye development. Tuna is also a good source of vitamin D and vitamin B12, which is necessary for the body to utilise folic acid and can help prevent anaemia. B12 enhances brain function, particularly in older people. Tuna also contains niacin, which is essential for the metabolism of carbohydrates and may offer some protection against cancer. It is a good supplier of selenium, an antioxidant credited with reducing rates of heart disease and cancer.
Cons: Tinned tuna has only a fraction of the omega-3 fatty acid content of fresh. However, one serving provides the recommended daily allowance of vitamin D and is still a rich source of selenium.
