Pros: Tomatoes are one of a handful of fruit and vegetables which are rich in a carotenoid called lycopene. Research suggests that people who have the highest blood levels of lycopene are at much lower risk of developing various forms of cancer, including cancers of the cervix, bladder and pancreas. Tomatoes are a good source of vitamin C, which helps boost the immune system, and contain some fibre, which may help prevent colon/rectal cancer. Canned tomatoes have a little less vitamin C than fresh, but levels of vitamin E stay the same. The quantity of free radical-busting carotenoids such as betacarotene generally falls during canning, depending on the processing conditions. But lycopene, a carotenoid found uniquely in such high levels in tomatoes, is actually better absorbed from processed tomato products than from fresh. This is because cooking breaks down the tough cell matrix, allowing the antioxidant to be absorbed more easily.

Cons: If you suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, tomatoes may aggravate this condition.
