Pros: Tofu, or bean curd, is made from fermented soya beans. It is high in protein, cholesterol-free and low in calories. Tofu made with calcium sulphate is a good source of calcium, which strengthens bones, and maintains normal heart function and normal blood pressure. Like most soya bean products, tofu is rich in isoflavones, compounds that are phytoestrogens, homone-like substances which mimic the action of oestrogen in humans. Phytoestrogens may offer many of the beneficial effects of oestrogen without any of the negative aspects - many women take synthetic oestrogen to alleviate menopausal symptoms, such as hot flushes. Research suggests that women who eat food rich in soya isoflavones have lower rates of breast cancer than those who don't. Isoflavones may also lower rates of prostate cancer.
