The timing of menopause
Definitions:
Perimenopause is the time of transition between a woman's reproductive years and when menstruation ceases completely, or menopause.
Average age of onset of perimenopause: 46.
Age of onset for 95 percent of women: 39 to 51.
Percentage of women who have onset before age 40: 1 percent.
Average duration: 5 years.
Average age of menopause: 51.
What happens:
During perimenopause, hormone levels fluctuate and decline, but not necessarily in an orderly manner. Shifts in hormones are a major contributor to the physical, mental and emotional imbalance that many women experience. Eventually estrogen levels decrease to the point that the lining of the uterus no longer builds up and menstruation ceases. This is menopause.
