Pediatrician may still be best for teen

pediatrician can be your teen's best choice.

In an article last Wednesday headlined: "Has your teen outgrown the pediatrician?" a case was made to switch newly minted teens from their pediatrician to a family-practice physician.

I disagree with the idea that just because your teen turns 13 it is time to find a new doctor. It actually might make more sense for your child to continue with his or her pediatrician throughout the teen years.

Your child's pediatrician is trained, willing and able to handle the health issues, emotional and physical development, and concerns of adolescents.

The American Academy of Pediatrics actually defines a pediatric patient as birth to age 21.

Many pediatricians have parts of waiting rooms, and some exam rooms, set up to be teen-friendly with appropriate magazines and educational material.

There are many reasons to maintain your child's relationship with his or her pediatrician.

Most important, there is often a lifelong bond and a good comfort level for your teen — so much so that they often have to be encouraged to find a new physician when they reach age 21.

That strong bond could make it easier for your teen to share information with his pediatrician, who can then help dissuade him from risky behaviors.

The pediatrician has a lengthy history with your family, which provides continuity.

Pediatricians are trained to assess and manage growth and development issues, clearly important events during adolescence. They are also able to manage puberty issues, including menstruation and common gynecological issues, and can refer to specialists if need be.

There is no need to routinely introduce a gynecologist visit into the mix at this point.

Of course, if your teen feels uncomfortable going to his or her pediatrician, by all means discuss the pros and cons of changing and act on the result.

Actually, this is a great time to get your teen involved and responsible for his or her own health and for your teen to spend some of each appointment time with his or her physician without a parent.

Your teen may look like an adult and try to act like an adult, but his or her fast developing body and brain should not be treated like they have reached adulthood — yet.

Pediatricians are often the best place for providing age-appropriate care for your teen.

Jeff Lindenbaum is director of Teen Health Services at Group Health Cooperative and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
