To keep yourself injury-free while participating in winter sports, experts recommend you:
Wear properly fitting protective equipment appropriate for your sport such as helmets and eye goggles, and snowboarders should consider wrist guards.
Wrist braces akin to those worn by inline skaters greatly reduce the impact of a rider's fall on the hands and wrist, said Dr. Herb Alexander, an orthopedic surgeon in Ketchum, Idaho.
Long the domain of snowboarding, helmets also are a good idea to protect skiers, skaters and even sledders from unexpected head trauma.
Most ski resorts rent helmets as they do other equipment, said Troy Hawks, editor of the National Ski Areas Association Journal, a trade publication in Lakewood, Colo.
"A lot of people taking lessons are urged to go ahead and get a helmet, particularly children."
Avoid terrain that's beyond your abilities and watch for changing conditions. Forgo the black-diamond slopes unless you have the needed skill.
"There's a lot of peer pressure in skiing and people trying to keep up with their friends, and they really shouldn't do that," said Dr. Matthew Shapiro, who's on the board of directors for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and practices in Eugene, Ore.
Keep an eye out for kids playing recklessly on the ice, such as running in sneakers to get a spontaneous slide, which can hurt the ankle or cause an unprotected fall.
Develop muscle strength and get regular cardiovascular exercise. Tone your leg muscles if you ski and participate in any sport that requires work on flexibility and balance, which tend to decrease with age but remain as important as body strength for conditioning.
Learn to fall more efficiently, or as Alexander put it, "Tuck and roll and don't fight the fall." Falls on outstretched hands, while an instinctive way to protect the head and torso, account for many snowboarding and skating injuries, he said. "If you put your arms out too far, it could break your wrist or dislocate the shoulder or elbow." Skiers also can reduce their odds of leg problems by falling with resignation, he said. "When they fight that fall, it puts tremendous torque on the knee. It can cause it to fracture or to tear the ACL."
For sledding, choose sleds you can steer to avoid hitting obstacles at high speed. Beware of any trees, fences, roads or protruding tree roots.
Bundle up to avoid frostbite and hypothermia, and don't forget the sunscreen to block harmful UV rays.
