What's a healthy breakfast?
It's true that some cereals fall down on their salt and sugar content, and many have a high glycaemic index which means they raise your blood sugar faster than is healthy and leave you hungry later.
But I wouldn't give up eating cereals just yet - even the sugary ones are better than nothing as they are very well fortified with a range of vitamins and minerals which can help to boost energy levels and ensure you don't miss out on essential nutrients.
The ideal is to carry on eating cereals but to chose carefully - good nutrient rich options that don't boost your blood sugar too fast are things like All Bran, bran flakes, Shredded Wheat (i.e. high fibre).
Yes, some of these may contain high levels of salt per 100g, but in context, considering you only eat around a 30g bowl a day, you can incorporate them into a healthy diet if you watch your salt intake for the rest of the day.
Other healthy options are old fashioned porridge, fruit and nut muesli or two slices of grainy toast with low fat spread and Marmite.
Adding yogurt and a piece of fruit will make any breakfast healthier.
