TV dinners puts kids off greens
Coach potato kids who grow up watching TV at mealtimes eat far fewer fruits and vegetables than youngsters who sit down to a quiet dinner, according to new American research.
The study of 91 families carried out by Tufts University in Boston found that almost half had the television on during two or three meals a day.
These children tended to consume more pizza, snack food and caffeine-laced soft drinks.
Katharine Coon, lead author of the study, said: 'When the TV is on, our attention is diverted and eating can become automatic. When that happens it's easy to let healthy habits slip away and less healthy habits take over.'
The study does not explore the link between TV and obesity in children, which has been widely publicised in previous research.
However, Koon says her overall findings suggest so-called 'coach potato' kids may be in for a 'double whammy' - ending up leading a sedentary lifestyle and eating an unhealthy diet.
She adds: 'In my opinion, the most important public health issue raised by these findings concerns the amount of fruits and vegetables children are eating.
'There is a very strong link between fruits and vegetables in people's diets and the likelihood they will develop debilitating medical conditions later in life.'
In a separate survey US researchers found that parents who are too strict about their children's diet run the risk of causing psychological problems.
They found that overweight girls as young as five suffered from problems with low self esteem after their parents imposed restrictions on the type of food that they could eat.
Lead researcher Professor Leann Birch, of Penn State University, said: 'Restriction, which is often seen as an appropriate response on the part of the parents when a child becomes overweight, may actually make the problem worse.
'A better approach is to have health food in the house so that kids don't have to be restricted.'
