How does your dieting influence your child?

Children as young as three could be driven towards obesity and eating disorders by neurotic parents.

Nutritionists have found youngsters whose parents are on diets or over-anxious about food have a much greater risk of developing weight problems.

Research leader Dr John Reilly and colleagues at the human nutrition department of Glasgow Royal Hospital for Sick Children asked almost 100 children about their food preferences and the degree to which their parents controlled what they ate.

They found an alarming number of children knew all about calorie intake and were worried about overeating.

The study, which will be published in full later this year, is the first in Britain to examine the eating habits of children so young.

'Our initial results have shown that over-anxious parents who are concerned that their children will develop problematic eating habits might actually be encouraging this sort of pattern to develop,' said Dr Reilly.

'A large number of the children who expressed a knowledge about calories and food intake were those with parents who were dieters.'

Figures published earlier this year showed that a third of children are overweight by 11.

A fifth of boys are classified as obese - dangerously overweight. The proportion of fat babies and toddlers is also rising.

A separate study by researchers at Pennsylvania State University in the US found middle-class mothers who were concerned about their own weight were the most likely to impose restrictions on their daughters' eating.

These girls tended to binge on the forbidden foods whenever their parents were not around to stop them, the scientists discovered.

They also lacked the natural instinct to simply eat when hungry.

A further study, featured in the US journal Pediatrics, found girls who perceived their mothers as persistent dieters were more likely to attempt to lose weight.

Wendy Doyle, of the British Dietetic Association, said parents should give their children sensible advice about what to eat and encourage them to exercise more.
