Heinz ketchups with Atkins diet

For many dedicated followers of the Atkins Diet, it is the one obstacle to a perfect breakfast.

They can eat all the bacon, eggs and sausage they like, but tomato ketchup is strictly off the menu.

Its ingredients of tomato and sugar make it high in the carbohydrates forbidden to Atkins dieters, particularly in the early stages.

Soon, however, help will be at hand. Heinz is launching a low-carb ketchup in the U. S. , and it is expected to be on sale in Britain by early next year.

Following the astonishing success of the controversial Atkins Diet, a number of food manufacturers are rushing to add low-carb offerings to their product lines.

Heinz president of U.S. consumer products, Dave Moran, said the new One Carb brand reflects a 'rise in interest in obesity, fat and carbs'.

The ketchup contains one gram of carbohydrates per tablespoon serving - 75 per cent less than the traditional product - because the sugar has been replaced by a low-calorie sweetener. Heinz says taste and texture is 'comparable' to the original.

The American founder of the diet, the late Dr Robert Atkins, believed that carbohydrates such as bread, pasta, rice and starchy vegetables over- stimulate the production of insulin, resulting in hunger and weight gain.

Atkins rules allow followers to eat unlimited quantities of food high in protein and fats, particularly the saturated fats in animal and dairy products.

However, the official UK line is that these fats are linked to the high cholesterol and furring of the arteries which causes heart disease, strokes and heart attacks. Recently, the Food Standards Agency issued a health warning about lowcarb diets.

It said the regimes tend to be high in fat, which creates a higher risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

Despite the well-publicised health alerts, an estimated three million Britons are currently on the Atkins.

McDonald's, a favourite with Atkins followers, yesterday reported a sharp revival in profits and sales.

Devotees are advised to buy the burger, without the fries, and throw away the bun.

The company revealed that samestore sales in the U.S. were up by 10 per cent in September compared with a year ago.

McDonald's is about to launch a new upmarket beefburger in the UK that will appeal to Atkins followers.

The 'Big Tasty' is topped with Emmenthal cheese and will sell for about £2.59 - 70p more than a Big Mac. The U.S. brewer Anheuser-Busch has launched Michelob Ultra, a low-carb, lowcalorie beer, while Labatt is about to bring out a version called 'Rock Green Light'.
