Can you eat yourself well?
As we all know from that grim morning after feeling, what you put into your body can make a difference to how you feel. But can you actually eat yourself well?
Yes, according to Mike Hudson of the Centre for Nutritional Medicine in Harley Street, Britain's only clinic dedicated to nutritional medicine.
Brought over from America, nutritional medicine is a technique looking at how the human body works to heal itself depending on our genetic make-up.
This, claim practitioners, means they can detect which intolerances or allergies we inherit from our parents, and, in turn, how our body reacts to certain foods.
An initial consultation at the clinic involves filling in a questionnaire and discussing whether food intolerances or allergies run in the family. A doctor and nutritionist will decide which test - if any - is necessary to prove if an intolerance, allergy or any other food problem is present.
These tests may also include genetic analysis for allergies like lactose and gluten, bone markers to check that nutrients are being used effectively by the body, cholesterol and fatty acid screens and liver function analysis.
After a diagnosis from the tests has been confirmed, diet and lifestyle changes are prescribed to address any imbalances, and supplements may be given to stimulate the body into healing itself.
Hudson claims nutritional medicine is particularly good for conditions that have a proven link with blood sugar levels like polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis and cardiovascular problems.
Polycystic ovaries can be difficult to cope with, he says, but understanding how hormone imbalances are linked with insulin levels in the blood means we can design a low fat diet to eliminate any symptoms.
Although nutritional medicine is a relatively new speciality, nutritional therapy has been around for many years. So how are they different?
Rather than being based on strict genetics, nutritional therapy looks at the whole body and how vitamins and minerals relate to particular conditions. Therapists claim to cure conditions like irritable bowel syndrome, food intolerances, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, diabetes and age-related problems to do with the menopause or menstrual cycle.
'It's important to remember that although there are general diet rules, nutritional therapy is tailored to suit individual needs', says Marilyn Glanville, a qualified nutritional therapist.
The patients who visit her are often deficient in zinc, she says, which can lead to acne, lowered senses of taste and smell, depression and loss of appetite or low fertility. For this, the therapist would prescribe a diet higher in zinc-rich fish, pumpkin seeds and green vegetables.
Another common deficiency, she says, which leads to dry skin and hair, dandruff and aching joints, is essential fatty acids. This is often due to a diet too low in fat, and can be cured by including oily fish, nuts, seeds and linseed oil in the diet.
So is it possible to eat yourself well? 'Blood and bone analysis can provide a marker for food deficiencies,' says a spokesperson for the British Nutrition Foundaton.
'However, much of the advice offered by nutritional therapists - rather than a registered nutritionist - is based on anecdotal evidence rather than results of controlled trials carried out in experimental conditions.'
