Battle of the bodies
We put the celebrity superbodies to the test and reveal why they're not as fit as they look.
Madonna:
Age: Height: 5ft 4in Weight: 8st Diet: Once a fan of a low-carbohydrate diet, Madonna now sticks to a strict vegetarian macrobiotic diet, which separates foods into acid and alkaline groups. A typical meal could be seaweed soup followed by brown rice with watercress and onion salad. On her recent tour, she requested that Starbucks cappucinos and the energy drink Red Bull be available. She also drinks lots of water. Exercise: From jogging to performing gruelling dance routines, Madonna has always kept fit. Recently she declared herself gym-free: 'No more pumping iron, no more Stairmaster, no more treadmill . . . I'm liberated.' She now practices ashtanga yoga for a couple of hours a day. She puts her toned body down to yoga and dance. Lifestyle: Madonna says her life is based around early nights and exercise. She's a big fan of natural medicine and swears by Ayurvedic herbal remedies and massage to boost her energy. Cigarettes and alcohol: Madonna doesn't smoke and drinks only occasionally. Our experts says: Madonna's body is a product of years of well thought-out programming. The money spent on personal trainers, chefs and advisers would make it impossible for most people to follow her regime. Her insistence that her toned body is a result of yoga and dance is baffling as she's always had a well-sculpted body through working out in a gym. On the downside, cappucinos and Red Bulls are an unhealthy way of boosting energy. 9/10
Elle Macpherson
Age: 37 Height: 6ft Weight: 9st 7lb Diet: Elle's never been a fan of fad diets. She has fruit for breakfast, a good lunch of jacket potato and salad, and a light dinner. If she's having a 'fat' day, she'll skip a meal. Last year, when suffering from low blood sugar, she was advised by nutritionist Gudrun Jonsson to avoid simple carbohydrates, such as pasta, and replace them with complex carbohydrates such as cooked vegetables, brown rice and buckwheat. Elle drinks eight glasses of water a day. Exercise: While in the Bahamas, Elle swims and powerwalks through the sea. While she's city-based, she does light weights and runs up to six miles daily. She also does Pilates at least twice a week. Lifestyle: Because she lives between the Bahamas, London and New York, changes in time zones put a lot of strain on her body. As an extra health kick, she uses energy-boosting herbal remedies. Cigarettes and alcohol: Drinks occasionally and doesn't smoke. Our experts say: Elle doesn't look as old as her 37 years, which is probably due to a combination of good genes, exercise and healthy eating. Running daily is overdoing it a bit - unless you're preparing for a marathon, a maximum of three runs a week, combined with other aerobic exercise, is better. Skipping meals is not a good idea, especially if she has problems with low blood sugar. Overall, however, she projects a healthy, nonfanatical lifestyle. 9/10
Catherine Zeta Jones Age: 31 Height: 5ft 8in Weight: 9st 5lb Diet: After the birth of Dylan, Catherine went on a strict carbohydrate-free crash diet to lower her 11st 7lb weight. Her diet is more balanced now, with carbohydrates included at breakfast and lunch but never eaten after 5pm, which she says has helped stabilise her weight. Exercise: To get in shape for her wedding, Catherine hired a personal trainer who put her on a rigid gym programme. She has also visited the Ashrana Health Camp in Malibu, where guests eat a strict raw-food diet, and undergo gruelling hikes and aerobics workouts. Lifestyle: Catherine has a busy life as a mother and Hollywood star. She takes regular breaks to Bermuda and tries to get at least eight hours' sleep a night - her most valuable beauty trick. Cigarettes and alcohol: Catherine gave up smoking while she was pregnant, but was recently spotted clutching a packet of cigarettes. She limits herself to an occasional glass of wine. Our expert says: While her weight has gone up and down (it has been as low as 8st 5lb), it has done so under fairly healthy conditions, although the health camp was probably a bit extreme and crash dieting was not a good idea as a new mother needs lots of energy. Many parents will be envious of Catherine's ability to get so much sleep - but she's right, it's one of the best ways to stay looking young. Aside from smoking, she's pretty much there. 7/10
Kate Winslet Age: 25 Height: 5ft 7in Weight: 9st 5lb Diet: Having tried a brussels sprouts-only diet in her pre-motherhood days, Kate has recently shed weight after consulting face-reader Maura Bright, who analysed her complexion and features and prescribed an eating plan in line with the principles of Oriental medicine. Kate has cut out sugar, wheat, dairy and oily foods. 'But I'm still allowed to eat potatoes and butter,' she says. Exercise: Kate goes to the gym twice a week and swims regularly. She claims that running around after, and lifting, her baby, Mia, helps burn calories and tones her arms. Lifestyle: Splitting from Jim Threapleton and selling her riverside mansion has undoubtedly put up her stress levels. Cigarettes and alcohol: Kate gave up smoking while pregnant and has cut back on alcohol. However, she was spotted smoking at this year's Reading Festival. Our expert says: I'm a little sceptical of any diet like Kate's, that is not based on sound nutritional evidence. All diets involve calorie reduction, and it is predominately this, rather than some craze of the moment, that leads to weight loss. Whatever the diet, it must be balanced and the fact that this one cuts out dairy but allows butter, which is a dairy product, means it may not be completely nutritionally sound. Kate's exercise routine is great and it's true - you really do develop strong arms and burn extra calories from carrying babies. 5/10
Liz Hurley
Age: 36 Height: 5ft 8in Weight: 8st 8lb Diet: Liz has always been a fan of faddy diets, trying both the low-carbohydrate diet and the blood-type diet. Recently, nutritionist/ healer Alla Svirinskaya advised her to avoid dairy produce, white flour and caffeine. Liz says the only thing she envies about other people is their metabolism. 'I'd love to be able to eat 12,000 calories a day and still be blade-thin, but I can't,' she says. When she wants to lose weight, she reduces her calories to 900 a day. Exercise: Liz hates the gym and prefers to keep fit through horse-riding, walking and gardening. Lifestyle: It's not all partying. Liz says she can often be found in bed at 7pm, with a bottle of wine and packet of pretzels. She spends a lot of time in America, but runs her own film company in London, so does a lot of travelling. Cigarettes and alcohol? Yes to both. Our expert says: Liz looks fantastic, but the way she goes about it is not healthy. A more active lifestyle would enable her to increase her calorie content, so she could eat a balanced intake of around 2,000 calories a day. The drinking and smoking will not help her keep her good looks. She needs a good personal trainer and should be prepared to put on a few pounds of lean muscle, while forgetting those very low calorie diets. 4/10
