Have I got an eating disorder?
No you are definitely not overweight - your healthy weight range is around 8 stone 5lbs to 10 stone 6lbs.
During the teenage years, you are quite likely to put on some weight as your body develops curves, but this is entirely natural.
You may still be growing in height too, and you're likely to put on a few pounds before a growth spurt upwards.
If you do find your weight creeping upwards unacceptably, don't think about going on a diet as they rarely work.
Also, if you start dieting in your teens, you are likely to set up a pattern of yo-yo dieting for the rest of your life.
Instead just make a pledge to eat healthily - that means one third of your diet being fruit and veg, another third starchy carbohydrates like bread, pasta and rice, a couple of lean portions of protein (meat, fish, eggs, nuts) daily and two portions of low fat dairy products like skimmed milk and low fat yoghurt.
Fatty, sugary, foods like crisps and chocolate are fine too, but in moderation only.
Sadly there's a lot of pressure on young women to be perfect these days, and this can result in some of them becoming obsessive about food, as it's one thing they feel they can have control over.
Signs that you may be developing an eating disorder (look out for this in you friends too) include constantly worrying about your weight or restricting what you eat, wearing baggy clothes to cover weight loss, taking laxatives or making yourself sick after food, and constantly assuming that you aren't thin enough when in reality most people are heavier than you.
Should any of these signs and symptoms apply to you, you can get advice from the Eating Disorders Association, 103 Prince of Wales Road, Norwich, NR1 1DW (Helpline 01603 621 414) or visit their website.
