Eating for my blood type

A favourite of Martine Mc Cutcheon, the blood group diet suggest that different blood types (i.e O, A, B and AB) have different dietary needs based on the evolutionary pattern of their blood type.

Despite it's many fans there isn't any scientific basis to back up this diet which recommends a meat-rich diet for the most common blood group, group 0.

The author of the best selling blood group diet book Eat Right For Your Type claims that certain blood types react to food substances called lectins in the bloodstream.

However he gives no scientific proof of this and completely avoids the common scientific opinion that for the most part lectins are usually destroyed by cooking or are detoxified by stomach acid.

He also states that if you eat the wrong food for your blood type you will get agglutination of the red blood cells - a potentially life threatening condition - which eventually cause the brain, heart, kidneys, retinas, and adrenals to pack up. If this really was happening on such a wide scale due to food it would most definitely be well known to pathologists and other medical scientists - it would not be a subtle medical condition.

That said, there's no doubt that you would lose weight on any of the blood group diets, as they are fairly low in calories. But if it turns out you were O group like the majority of individuals, I'd be concerned about you potentially eating too much saturated fat and missing out on healthy fibre and disease-protective antioxidants.

In a nutshell, I'd give the blood groups diet a wide berth. I'm afraid there's no substitute for a healthy balanced diet with moderate amounts of lean meat along with plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
