Light that can banish unsightly veins

ANEW type of light therapy claims to get rid of spider veins in seconds. Light that is similar to but brighter than a camera flashgun, heats up the veins, making them shrivel and disappear. It can also be used to treat telangiectasias - the

tiny visible blood vessels that are similar to spider veins but which are found mainly on the face, especially around the nose and cheeks.

It's estimated that around one in five people will have some kind of disorder linked to veins at some time in their lives, and many of them will develop spider veins.

Women have double the risk, with 40 per cent liable to develop them, and some research suggests that birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy may aggravate the condition.

Gravity also plays a part in the development of varicose veins, which is why people working in jobs that require long periods of standing up, such as nurses, shop assistants, waitresses and teach-ers, are at a higher risk than the general population.

There is a genetic element, too, with varicose veins, spider veins and telangiectasias all running in some families.

The job of veins is to transport de- oxygenated blood back to the heart and lungs.

Unlike arteries, veins contain valves that make sure that the blood flows at a very low pressure.

But when these valves become damaged and fail to open or close completely, blood flow is altered and pressure in the veins increases. This leads to gradual enlargement of the veins causing varicose veins.

Spider veins are extremely small vessels that become larger and visible, usually on the leg, when small feeder blood vessels just under the skin get bigger as pressure inside the veins increases.

Telangiectasias are similar, but appear around the face, neck and upper chest.

Researchers have discovered that because these small veins are in or just under the outer skin, conventional laser treatment or surgery is not necessary for their removal.

The new, pulsed-light treat-ment uses coloured light to heat the vein up to 5mm below the skin. The light is absorbed by the vein and not by the surrounding tissue.

The therapy works on the principle that light is absorbed by colour and that the light generates heat. The vein is damaged by the heat and slowly disappears as it is absorbed by the body, leaving a clear patch of skin.

In the therapy, which takes only a few minutes and costs £90 to £200 a session, a gel is first applied to the area to be treated. It's described as a virtually painless procedure and, in some cases, the problem vein will disappear with just a few pulses.

More extensive spider veins will require further sessions.

Side effects can include temporary reddening of the skin or localised swelling.

Dr Ismat Nasiruddin, a GP who also works part time at The Private Clinic in London using the therapy on patients, says: 'It is very new, it only had a license a couple of months ago, but the results are very impressive.

'It is perfect for treating spider veins. However, the deeper varicose veins have to be addressed with a carbon dioxide laser.

'The majority of the heat from the light is absorbed by the haemoglobin in the blood vessels, and so there is no risk of scarring.

'The treatment can give immediate results. Up to six treatment sessions may be necessary, but good results can often be obtained after just three appointments.'

JANE FISHER, 34, a Bank of Scotland sales executive who lives in Chester, had one session of the light therapy treatment after suffering with spider veins for years.

'I used to work in retail and I put it down to the standing up all hours, but I know there are many other things that can cause it,' she says.

'I had spider veins at the bottom and top of one leg. They had bothered me for years but I didn't know there was anything I could do about them. I thought I just had to live with them.

'I had been in contact with the clinic and they told me about this new treatment, so I thought I would give it a go.

'It is uncomfortable, but not like having needles stuck into you. The only way I can describe the feeling is that it is like having an elastic band snapped against your leg. It stings a bit for a second, then it's gone. There is not even any need for anaesthetic.

'I've had only one lot of treatment so far, but the results are amazing. After they had done it they told me to have a look, and there was nothing there.

'I had to wear support tights as a precaution for two days and had a bit of bruising, but that will soon go. The main things is the veins have gone.'
