Parents' torment as baby born with every bone in her body broken
Like every proud mother who has just given birth, Louise Mills was desperate to hold her newborn baby. With her husband Christian at her side, the 31-year-old was overjoyed that the months of anticipation had finally come to an end.
But the mother-of-three's delight soon turned to torment when she was told by doctors that she could not cradle her new baby daughter. And she was devastated to hear that it was because baby Alexandra had been born with every major bone in her body broken.
Alexandra, who is just two weeks old, is one of a small number of children who are born in Britain each year suffering from brittle bone disease. The rare and incurable condition causes the bones to break and fracture easily, in some cases merely as a result of coughing or sneezing.
In the case of baby Alexandra, it was the act of birth itself which broke the bones in her skull, legs, arms and ribs. Luckily, however, doctors at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary were quick to diagnose the condition after baby Alexandra refused to stop crying.
But her parents have still not been able to hug her fragile body, two weeks on from the birth. And yesterday they spoke of their torment at having to stand by helplessly and watch their daughter's suffering.
Mrs Mills, who is also mother to two healthy children - daughter Georgie, three and Jimmy, two - has been fighting her natural instinct to cuddle her new baby. She said yesterday: "She's been in her little cot since she was born.
"It's been hard not being able to hold her. "It's only now that we've been able to pick her up by placing her on a pillow, but we still can't hug her."
Mr Mills, 33, a project engineer added: "She was obviously in a lot of pain. "We were told we could have lost her. We still don't know what to expect.
"She could be wheelchair bound, but we are in a far better position now than when she was born two weeks ago."
Plaster casts
Doctors initially made tiny plaster casts for baby Alexandra and put her legs in traction. But the tiny youngster kept kicking them off, so doctors decided to let her heal without them.
Alexandra, who was born weighing 5lb 2oz, is now being treated with special painkillers to ease the discomfort.
She has also been given drugs to boost calcium levels and strengthen her bones. However brittle bone disease, or osteogenesis imperfecta, is incurable and will plague the baby for life.
The condition is hereditary, but it can also occur as a one off. This is thought to have happened in the case of Alexandra as there is no family history of the disease. Around 40 to 60 babies are born with the condition each year in Britain - up to 20 of them do not have a family history of bone disease.
It is caused by a genetic defect that impairs the body's production of one of its building blocks - a protein called collagen which is found in the bones. People with the most severe form of the condition can have several hundred fractures in a lifetime.
The Mills family, from Workington, Cumbria have now moved to Newcastle to be near Alexandra while she remains in hospital indefinitely.
