Hair Dye May Increase Cancer Risk

The American Cancer Society says your risk is very low. Lots of Iowans sit in salon chairs to change their hair color. But a new study says that 10 percent of lymphoma cases may be caused by hair dye.

The new study says people who color their hair face a 19 percent increased risk of lymphoma. For those who color at least 12 times year the risk is 26 percent. For people who started coloring their hair before 1980...the risk is 37 percent higher.

Susan Fisher with the University of Rochester says studies like this one are important. "These studies are very important because we don't know the actual cause of lymphoma."

Barb Fassbinder is a hair color specialist at City Looks Salon. She's been coloring hair for 20 years. She says you should go to a stylist you trust to get your hair color. You can lower your risk by keeping the color off the scalp. "A lot of times the color isn't even on the scalp, so you always have the option to do foiling or something like that where there aren't chemicals touching the scalp."

Christy Coleman has colored her hair just a few times. But she says the possible risk of cancer won't stop her from spicing up her natural hair color. "Of all the things in the world that can cause cancer, I guess I'll consider this to be one of the smaller."

Overall the risk for developing lymphoma from hair dye is still very low. Other cancer risks like obesity or smoking are much greater. In 1980 the government banned certain chemicals in hair dye. Hair dye is not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration.
