Bionic limbs could be reality within five years
Researchers created metal implants that attach to the bone and that protrude through the skin. Prosthetic limbs can be fixed to the implants in a way that could make connection with the nervous system possible.
The implants stick out like horns, which were inspired by studying deer antlers. Deer antlers were used as an example of structures that penetrate the skin; teeth are the only exception in humans.
Until now it has been impossible to seal the skin around the point at which the implants penetrated the skin.
Living cells reacted by trying to heal the wound and push it out.
Dr Catherine Pendegrass, who helped develop the technique at University College London for her PhD, said: “We wanted to develop something that permanently breaches the skin so an external implant can be attached to the skeleton. The problem is that skin cells like to be continuous; the skin wants to grow round the implant and push it out. No-one has been able to seal the skin around a metal implant.”
The solution was to build a porous titanium implant that allows the skin to grow through it.
The technology, known as Intraoseous Transcutaneous Amputation Prosthesis (ITAP), has already had a major impact on a group of trial patients missing fingers and thumbs.
Around 10 patients so far have taken part in the on-going study at London’s Mount Vernon Hospital.
One man has been able to use a pen and write for the first time in 15 years.
A woman who had lost an eye from cancer now has a prosthetic eye that can be held in its socket with magnets.
A paper on the research is due to appear in the Journal of Anatomy this month.
The technology raises the prospect of developing true bionic limbs in the near future, say the scientists.
