Overview of The Healthy
Competition Program
Through this teacher guide, the series of diary entries, and the healthycompetition.org web site,
The Healthy Competition program is a comprehensive curriculum on performance-enhancing
drugs (PEDs) and sports supplements. In fact, the program uses the topic of PEDs and sports
supplements as a way to explore broader health issues with your students throughout its five units.
Plus, during the course of the program, students can meet the expectations of many different
National Health Education Standards.
Each unit is structured for completion in one traditional class period of 45 – 50 minutes.
However, each unit includes extension ideas that you can incorporate with more class time and/or
as homework. Additionally, each unit contains suggestions on how to compress its elements to fit
into a shorter time period.
Unit Elements
Each unit of the program follows a similar format, containing:
Diary Entries — These are available in three formats: on an audio CD included with this
program, on the healthycompetition.org web site, and in transcript form in this teacher guide. The
diary entries chart a week of three typical students who reflect on their lives, particularly their
decision on whether they should sign a Healthy Competition Pledge. Every unit begins with an
entry from each of the students — P.J., Dunk, and Stu — as a springboard into a unit’s main focus.
Instructional Support Pages — Each unit in this teacher guide contains information and
materials to make the program extremely classroom and teacher friendly:
Overview: This section identifies a unit’s overall objective, its desired outcomes, important terms,
and its ability to meet certain National Health Education Standards and their Performance
Indicators. (See Appendix 2.)
Instructional Guide: This section details the steps necessary to complete a unit, suggesting
discussion questions for anticipation and reflection, as well as methods for introducing, completing,
and extending the unit’s main activity.
Unit Extensions: This section outlines homework ideas, writing prompts, and other instructional
tools to extend a unit’s focus.
Diary Transcripts: This section of the teacher guide can be photocopied. It gives students the
ability to read the diary entries as they listen to them. Additionally, the transcript pages contain a
discussion question after each diary entry that you can easily incorporate into a unit’s lesson. If
students are unable to listen to the diary entries, this section can act as a substitute.
Activity Sheet: This page provides you with a structured, group-oriented activity. It is designed
specifically to be copied onto transparency film for the overhead or onto paper for student
handouts. It guides students through a step-by-step process as they develop skills, acquire and
apply knowledge, demonstrate knowledge and explain and discuss concepts learned in each unit.
Unit Previews
The Healthy Competition Program follows an intentional sequence as it moves from Unit 1
through Unit 5. Because each is structured for completion in one traditional class period, you
should be able to complete the entire program in a week. Each unit, however, has the flexibility to
allow you to double units in a block period and/or complete the units on non-consecutive days.
Here is a preview of Units 1 through 5.
Unit 1 — PEDs and Sports Supplements
Overview: Unit 1 focuses on providing students with information on performanceenhancing
drugs (PEDs) and sports supplements, primarily what they are and their
potential side effects.
Diary Entries: In the character’s first set of entries, students learn some background information
on the characters and the reasons why they are keeping audio diaries for a week. Additionally,
since the characters have begun studying PEDs and sports supplements and have been given a
Healthy Competition Pledge (HCP), their entries set up the unit’s exploration of PEDs and sports
supplements.
“Riddled with Clues for You to Use” Activity Sheet: Using information from the
healthycompetition.org web site and/or the PEDs & Sports Supplements Fact Sheet (Appendix I),
students will have to solve a series of riddles. It is a challenging and fun way to work with facts and
demonstrate knowledge about PEDs and sports supplements.
Unit 2 — Why Do We Risk Our Health?
Overview: Many people — particularly teens — engage in behaviors that they know to
be risky and unhealthy. Use of PEDs and sports supplements may qualify as such
behavior. This unit examines some of the reasons that people knowingly risk their health,
including pop culture’s positive and negative influence on such behaviors.
Diary Entries: Students find out that one of the characters has taken the sports supplement Andro.
Plus, all of the characters mention the various types of pressure they are under. Pressure may be one
of the reasons that students determine that people engage in risky/unhealthy behaviors.
“Risky Business” Activity Sheet: Students will follow the activity’s steps that ask them to list
examples of risky, unhealthy behaviors; analyze the reasons behind those behaviors; evaluate pop
culture’s influence on those behaviors; and create a message to encourage healthier behavior.
Unit 3 — Not Just Cheating Your Body
Overview: This unit explores the theme of cheating as a way to demonstrate that
taking PEDs and sports supplements is both risky and a form of cheating. By focusing
on cheating, the unit opens up the topic to students who have not had experience with PEDs but have
had experience with cheaters.
Diary Entries: Cheating certainly comes out in the diary entries, particularly in the way that
Dunk glares at Stu and in the way that Stu feels guilty. Plus, P.J. admires the way that his health
teacher is not resorting to scare tactics in teaching them about PEDs and sports supplements.
“No Cheating Necessary” Activity Sheet: Students will examine instances of cheating,
eventually creating a dialogue in which students must convince someone who has cheated or is
contemplating cheating that the act of cheating is wrong.
Unit 4 — Golden Goal (Setting)
Overview: By this unit, students should see that taking PEDs and sports
supplements is wrong, so Unit 4 focuses on how people can accomplish health and
fitness goals without taking PEDs or sports supplements. This unit also demonstrates that reaching
goals can require hard work and persistence.
Diary Entries: Students learn that the example of an Olympic speed skater’s hard work and
persistence inspires Stu; it also convinces him to admit to P.J. that he took andro. Dunk also
expresses some of her hesitation and frustration about signing the HCP.
“Go With the (Goal) Flow” Activity Sheet: Students will create flow charts that illustrate the
many steps necessary for them to reach a health/fitness goal that they set for themselves. Students
will work together to decide on their individual goals, as well as the steps required to reach the goals.
Unit 5 — HCP =
Overview: This final unit will capitalize on what students have learned throughout
Units 1 – 4. By this point, students should have the necessary understanding of PEDs and sports
supplements to make an educated choice about signing the HCP. Students should also be able to
influence others in choosing to take/not take PEDs and sports supplements.
Diary Entries: Students learn that both Dunk and Stu sign their HCPs. Stu’s final entry also
reveals that he will continue to keep a diary because he is sure that his audio diary experience has
helped him get through a difficult time.
“PEDucating Your Peers — Easy as A-B-C” Activity Sheet: Students will conceive of a method
for educating their peers about PEDs and sports supplements. Plus, one of the steps of the activity
provides a built-in assessment for students to demonstrate what they have learned in Units 1 – 4.

Appendix: The appendix contains two items. One is a PEDs/sports supplements fact sheet
to be used in conjunction with Unit 1, particularly if Internet access for your students is a
problem. The second item is a listing of all National Health Education Standards and their
corresponding Performance Indicators.
