Ten ways to trouble-free skin
still wince when I recall how badly the appearance of my chickenpoxed face dented my self-confidence at the age of sixteen, yet I only had to suffer for a few weeks, not the years that some teenagers, and even adults, who develop acne and spots have to endure.
Because skin complaints are often caused, or exacerbated, by an imbalance of skin-friendly nutrients, I've identified ten key areas to tackle if you have troublesome skin.
1. Although vitamin A can have a magical effect on problem skin, don't apply any preparations containing this vitamin unless prescribed by your doctor. Instead, boost your intake of foods that are rich in beta-carotene (which the body converts into vitamin A), including carrots, watercress, apricots, mangoes and melons.
2. Apricots, mangoes and melons also contain high levels of vitamin C, one of the most powerful skin-healers, as do berries, such as blueberries, blackcurrants, blackberries, plums, papayas and Kiwi fruits, so tuck into these. If you smoke, you'll need to take a 2000mg vitamin C supplement a day.
3. In fact, quit smoking! Nicotine attacks the blood vessels that supply the skin with oxygen and nutrients, as well as those that drain away waste products, a build-up of which can aggravate spots and acne.
4. Because zinc reduces inflammatory processes within the body, if your life is blighted by acne, eczema or psoriasis, eat more zinc-rich foods, such as seafood, hard, crumbly cheeses, nuts, seeds and pulses.
5. If you suffer from spots, eczema or psoriasis, boost your intake of omega-3 fatty acid and eicosapentanoic acid - both anti-inflammatories - by eating oily fish, such as salmon, tuna, sardines or mackerel, twice a week. Omega-6 fatty acid can control the hormones that make your skin overly oily, and hence spotty, so to derive its benefits, turn to seeds like linseeds, sunflower, sesame, pumpkin and hemp seeds, which are delicious roasted, either sprinkled over cereals or salads or as a snack.
6. Selenium and vitamin E are both skin-nurturing nutrients, so enjoy more of the foods that contain them, including avocados, blackberries, mangoes, tomatoes, seeds, spinach, watercress, brazil nuts, cashews and wholewheat cereals.
7. Although it's a myth that sweet foods, such as chocolate, cause spots, if they form a disproportionately large part of your diet, it's likely that you aren't eating enough fruits and vegetables, which can result in bad skin, so take steps to redress the balance.
8. The caffeine and tannins in tea, coffee and colas dehydrate the skin, so try not to drink more than a couple of delicious cups a day. And if you start drinking 2.5 litres of water a day, within days you'll be delighted by the improvement in your skin's appearance.
9. Be warned that overindulgence in alcohol - another dehydrator - can coarsen your skin and give you thread veins, open pores and 'oyster eyes'.
10. A poor complexion may be a sign that your gut isn't happy: people with irritable-bowel syndrome, for example, often notice that their symptoms are reflected in their faces. If you suspect a link, as well as trying the above tips and keeping a note of everything that you consume for a few weeks to see whether any particular food irritates your digestive system and skin, taking an acidophilus probiotic supplement may both alleviate your digestive problems and give you a clearer skin.
Now for a few extra tips. Firstly, take regular cardiovascular exercise, be it running, cycling or swimming (remember to wash your skin with pure water after getting out of the pool to remove chlorine and other chemical residues), to pump a healthy supply of blood around your skin, and, secondly, wage war on spots by exposing your skin to the sun (but remember to protect it with sunscreen).
Finally, if you're keen to use natural remedies on your skin, two of my favourites are antibacterial tea-tree oil and healing calendula preparations, available from health-food stores. __________________________________________
RECIPE: Blackcurrant yoghurt shortcakes
Serves 2
Small tub fresh blackcurrants, stalks and tops removed
juice of 1 orange
caster sugar (optional)
6 heaped tablespoons full-cream, thick, natural yogurt
2 Duchy Original lemon shortcake biscuits
Place the blackcurrants in small saucepan with the orange juice. Bring the mixture to the boil and then immediately turn down the heat and simmer gently for about 5 minutes, or until the blackcurrants are soft. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the blackcurrants to a small bowl.
Allow the blackcurrant and orange juice to continue to simmer gently until it has thickened to a syrup-like consistency. Turn off the heat and let the syrup cool a little before tasting it to see whether you need to add a little caster sugar (but don't make it too sweet because the tartness of the blackcurrants perfectly complements the sweetness of the shortcake biscuits). Leave the syrup to become completely cool before adding it to the blackcurrants and mixing it in lightly.
In another bowl, combine the yoghurt with a little of the blackcurrant mixture. Place a biscuit in a ramekin that is just large enough to allow the biscuit to lie flat and then add half of the yoghurt mixture, followed by half of the remaining blackcurrant topping. Repeat the procedure using a second ramekin and then serve immediately.
