A virtually black-skinned apricot has been developed by crossing the fruit with a plum. Called a Midnight Apricot, it is furry on the outside and contains yellow flesh inside.
It is three times sweeter than a strawberry and around double the size of a standard apricot.
But it does not come cheap. Marks & Spencer is selling the fruit priced at £2.99 for a pack of six.
It is known as an "aprium" because its origins are two-thirds apricot and one-third plum. Andrew Sharp, fruit technical manager at M&S, said the Midnight Apricot was "a delight" to eat.
"It is so sweet that people will want to just eat it on its own. Its striking colour will make it a must for the fruit bowl and as customers are getting more and more adventurous, we expect it to be a big hit," he said.
The fruit is part of the plumcot family - fruit created by crossing plums and apricots.
It comes from near Fresno, one of the large fruit-growing regions of California, where it was bred naturally from the sweetest, darkest varieties of apricot and plum.
