For kids, illness is more than skin deep
WASHINGTON, July 25 (UPI) -- Skin diseases impair the quality of life in children and teenagers to the same extent as more life-threatening illnesses, says a new study in the British Journal of Dermatology.
Dr. Sue Lewis-Jones, co-author of the study from the U.K. Ninewells Hospital, said the findings of the survey are not surprising to her after working for 25 years with children with skin diseases.
"Skin diseases are visual, so people often make comments even if they don't mean to be unkind," Lewis-Jones said.
"There is teasing and even bullying and peer group rejection. Children don't want to touch those with skin disease or hold their hands. Children lose confidence and feel embarrassed. This can lead to depression and behavior difficulties."
In the study, Scottish researchers surveyed 379 children from 5 to 16 years old who had skin diseases for at least six months, including acne, eczema and psoriasis. The study found that the quality of life was affected as much as their peers with epilepsy, renal disease and diabetes.
According to the National Psoriasis Foundation, that disease affects about 4.5 million people in the United States and causes dry itchy scales to appear around the elbows, knees and scalp.
Eczema encompasses a variety of inflammatory diseases. The most common form is known as atopic dermatitis and causes dry itchy rashes to form on the skin.
The National Institutes of Health estimates that 15 million U.S. citizens have a form of eczema and about 10 percent to 20 percent of infants develop the disease.
Acne has a much wider scope and affects about eight in 10 teenagers.
The study tried to identify the discomfort the skin disease created. For children with eczema, psoriasis and uticaria, the biggest concerns were itching or pain. Children with acne or warts were mainly worried about embarrassment associated with the disease.
The study surveyed how much the disease affected the child's life from sleep loss, pain, dietary restrictions, interference with school and play, friendships, teasing and bullying and medical treatment.
Lewis-Jones said the survey also targeted the parents' perspective on the disease. She designed the world's first dermatological questionnaire for children, the Children's Dermatology Life Quality Index.
