LONDON - Hundreds of National Health Service workers are to hold a strike ballot over government plans to privatise its delivery division, a union spokeswoman said on Tuesday. Unison, the public sector union, said staff were "angry and bitter" over the imminent transfer of the NHS logistics arm to a private group.
"Strike action is a last resort but we have no choice," Unison branch secretary Paul Harper said in a statement. "Members are extremely upset about the transfer and I am confident we will get a 'Yes' vote." NHS Logistics, which employs 1,400 staff in five centres, delivers medical supplies and food to hospitals across England and Wales. It is due to be taken over by German-owned delivery firm DHL and U.S. contractor Novation later this year, the government said. Unison's head of health Karen Jennings said the move was driven by the government's "obsession with market testing".
"No wonder our members are bitter and angry about the way they are being treated," she said. "They are proud to work for the NHS and feel betrayed by a government that is handing them over to DHL, like one of the packages they deliver."
Health Minister Andy Burnham said he recognised the important role played by NHS Logistics but said his department was looking to improve the service.
"We are committed to finding an arrangement which will be better for the service and provide better value for money and therefore allow greater investment in patient care services whilst offering protection to staff.
"However, we recognise the concerns of staff and are looking closely at the proposals before making a final decision."
