Health office calls it 'nuisance,' homeowners want it gone
Swimmers at one of the Lower Mainland's busiest beaches are urged to take precautions this summer to avoid a nasty - if harmless - infection.
Swimmers' itch at Crescent Beach has become a nagging concern in recent years, and is expected to continue to be an irritant this summer.
Though health officials insist the parasite does not pose a health risk to humans, swimmers are encouraged to shower immediately after coming in from an ocean dip, and to towel off vigorously. Oil-based suncreens also prevent the bug from burrowing into your skin.
"There will be warning signs posted at the beach that indicate people should take precautions," Surrey parks manager Owen Croy said Thursday.
"We know the problem exists. We know what causes it, and we're putting up precautionary signage to make sure people are well-informed."
Swimmers itch is caused by worm-like parasites which thrive in mud snails and shore birds at Crescent Beach.
Swimmers become infected when the parasites leave their snail hosts and float to the surface to make contact with ducks and waterfowl.
"People are like an accidental host," said Dr. Larry Gustafson, medical health officer with Fraser Health Authority.
Though larvae die almost immediately after entering the human body, the body's reaction causes red-spots and rashes known as swimmers' itch.
"It can be very mild or it can be a horribly nasty thing," Gustafson said.
"It's more a nuisance than anything else."
Crescent Beach resident Don Sinclair came down with a case of the itch last summer after wading thigh-deep at mid-tide. The rash became infected and turned into more than a minor irritation.
"It was like I had a whole bunch of mosquito bites. Then they started to ooze puss, and I had weeping open sores," said Sinclair, president of Crescent Beach Property Owners' Association.
"I can still feel the scars along my leg."
Residents in Crescent Beach hoped to curb the problem last summer by seeking permission from Department of Fisheries and Oceans to round up and dispose of the tiny mud snails. DFO refused to grant a permit, saying the strategy wouldn't work.
Originally from the East Coast, the snails were introduced at Crescent Beach by oyster farmers years ago.
"It would be virtually impossible to eradicate the snail that is the host organism," Croy said.
"It's been there for decades."
Though it may be impossible to purge the problem, Crescent Beach Property Owners Association is considering helping Surrey fund a study to search out remedies.
Sinclair fears swimmers' itch will have a major impact if host snails multiply.
"The general consensus is if this problem continues at Crescent it will spread," he said.
"If something like this were to migrate around to White Rock...the economic impact would be overwhelming to the community."
Gustafson said there's no indication the problem has moved around Kwomais Point, though he's not ruling it out.
"The snails that are the hosts could migrate. We wonder how much the snails actually move. We don't (know)," he said.
