Bandar Seri Begawan - Brunei recorded some 191 cases of food poisoning last year, up by 124 cases compared to 67 cases in 2004.
This was revealed at the safety and food quality course for managers and food handlers yesterday. As in the category of outbreak, four were recorded in the Brunei/Muara District and another four in Tutong last year. None were recorded in Belait and Temburong.
Six of them occurred in schools and each involved a family and the public. As for 2004, six outbreaks were recorded in Brunei/Muara and none in the other three districts. No figure is available for this year.
The factors that encourage the spread of germs are food containing high protein, temperature, and food moisture. Food poisoning can also be caused by chemical content, which deems poison such as insecticides and fertiliser from fish and in from cereals and nuts. Meanwhile, to avoid food out borne disease, the public is urged to practise proper food handling and control of insects and rodents to maintain cleanliness.
In the Constitution of Brunei Darussalam, Infectious Diseases Order, 2003, it was stated that in section 56 (e) that for the purpose of investigation into an outbreak or suspected outbreak of an infectious disease or the purpose of preventing the spread of any such infectious disease, the Director-General or any health officer authorised in writing, may require any person to furnish information within his knowledge or to produce for inspection any book or document within his custody or possession.
The course also highlighted balanced and healthy food maintaining cleanliness and premises inspection, environmental health, safety at food premises, self cleanliness and ideal- dress code for food handlers, proper hand washing procedure, the importance of using proper utensils and good etiquette in handling food. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
