Junking junk food: MISD sets new guidelines for student health

McKinney Courier-Gazette/Stefanie White/ This vending machine at McKinney North is filled with all sorts of tasty but unhealthy snacks. The school district is working to promote school nutrition.

The McKinney Independent School District board of trustees approved a policy that set guidelines to promote student health and general wellness at Thursday night's board meeting.

In a recent study done by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, almost half of all the states received a failing or poor grade in a school foods reports. The evaluation, which excluded school meal programs, failed 23 of the states and gave eight of them a D.

McKinney ISD is working in conjunction with the state of Texas to promote healthier meal choices and exercise. The Texas Department of Agriculture has issued the Texas Public School Nutrition Policy that gives specific clarifications to help improve nutrition and educate parents. Jennifer Marr, director of school nutrition for the district, makes sure that all schools are in compliance with the policy. Size restrictions and amount of sugar and fat are some of the things that is monitored by the state.

The district, Marr said, is trying to eliminate fried food, instead looking towards healthier

alternatives such as baking or steaming.

“We don't do any kind of frying in elementary schools,” Marr said.

In the middle and high schools, the district is hoping to replace all the fryers with steamers. When Boyd opens in the fall, the cafeteria will not have any fryers.

With the newly adopted policy, the district will require healthy food and drinks be offered at concession stands at school-related events. For classroom parties, such as pizza parties, healthy choices such as milk and vegetables must be offered.

Marr hopes that eventually teachers will find other ways to reward kids.

“Rewarding children with food is what our wellness committee is trying to get away from,” Marr said.

Marr says that what goes into vending machines is mostly to the principal's discretion. However, in elementary schools, carbonated drinks aren't allowed in the machines, and in middle schools, the vending machines can't be turned on until after lunch.

For physical activity, the district will be required to emphasize moderate physical activity on a regular basis.

Teachers are also encouraged to integrate physical activity into classroom lessons when appropriate.

The newly adopted policy will go into effect on the first day of school.
