B vitamins help body process homocystein

I always have used Grape-Nuts in my homemade granola. My cousin told me Grape-Nuts raises the homocysteine levels in the body, and that was not a good thing. Could you tell me if this is true?

  • J.S., Grand Rapids

That is not a claim I have heard of and could find nothing to substantiate it.

Homocysteine is an amino acid that has been identified as a potential marker for heart disease; the higher the level, the higher the risk of heart disease. It is found via a blood test, but is not a common screening test. Everyone's body makes homocysteine, and if everything is working as it should, homocysteine is converted into harmless amino acids.

Homocysteine studies are being done that should help us learn more. Until those studies are finished, here are a few things we know about homocysteine. Homocysteine levels increase with alcohol and smoking. Eating large amounts of protein foods and drinking excessive amounts of coffee also have been suggested as contributing factors.

What can you do to help lower the levels of homocysteine? According to the University of California at Berkeley Wellness Letter, three B vitamins, B-6, B-12 and folacin (also known as folic acid and folate) help the body convert homocysteine. So it makes sense to increase your intake of these vitamins, especially if you have a strong family history of heart disease. A daily multivitamin with 100 percent of these vitamins is a good idea.

Here are the food sources of these B vitamins. Folacin (400 micrograms is the adult RDA) is found in dark leafy greens, broccoli, wheat germ, beans, whole grains and fortified oatmeal. Vitamin B-6 (RDA is 1.3 milligrams for women, 1.7 milligrams for men) is found in whole grains, bananas, potatoes, beans, fish, meat and poultry. Vitamin B-12 (RDA is 2.4 micrograms) is found in meat, poultry, liver, eggs, fish, dairy foods, fortified cereal and fortified soy products.
