Diet success for 33st man

A man who was taken to a mental health hospital when he weighed 33-stone because he could not stop eating has lost five stone in 11 weeks, it emerged tonight.

Chris Leppard, 23, suffers from Prader-Willi Syndrome, which means he cannot tell when his stomach is full and could eat so much that it would kill him.

In February, East Sussex, social services applied for him to be admitted to a specialist eating disorder unit at The Eastbourne Clinic, Eastbourne, where he was assessed for seven days.

After his discharge, Mr Leppard, who now weighs just over 28 stone said he planned to return to his diet to prove to the authorities that he could lose weight without their intervention.

He said: "With a lot of determination and a lot of fighting, I've got through. I'm happy. I feel fitter, healthier. It's got nothing to do with the clinic."

Determination

Mr Leppard, whose ideal weight in 18 stone, now spends two hours a day working out with weights at a local gym and has cut down on sugary foods.

His mother, Anne, 49, who he lives with in Hastings, has even installed alarms on the kitchen cupboards which sound whenever he opens them.

"I'm very proud of him," she said. "Now he's got a future to look forward to."

Mrs Leppard is taking legal action against East Sussex County Council who she claims detained her son, who she says does not have a mental health problem, against his will.

She said she is being supported by The Citizens Commission on Human Rights and is due to attend a meeting at the House of Commons in London on Wednesday to discuss her case.

Mental disorder

East Sussex County Council said earlier that while it would not comment on individual cases, "all proper procedures had been followed".

In a statement the council said: "An application for admission to hospital for an assessment under the Mental Health Act is made where someone is suffering from a mental disorder of a degree or nature which warrants detention in hospital for a limited period in the interests of that person's health or safety, or to protect other people.

"The application for admission is made on the basis of written recommendations of two registered medical practitioners.

"Close relatives are consulted before the application is made."
