Do food diaries, fat magnets or slimming patches work?
Have you ever been tempted to try a quick-fix way to lose weight?
Here, in the second part of our look at slimming short-cuts we put a food diary, fat magnets and slimming patches to the test.
FOOD DIARY Tester's name: Danielle Simmonds-Dance Age: 31 Profession:
Head of Department, Telecoms Name of Product:The Any Diet Diary, Publisher: M Evans Cost: £6.50
What it claims to do:
Help anyone trying to change their eating habits by encouraging you to write down and therefore see exactly what you are eating and drinking.
What you have to do:
You make notes in the book on all the current habits and routines that you have that affect your weight, from your eating habits to your current level of physical activity. Below these you note what you would like to change about these routines and habits and what you are going to do to make the change. You then take notes of your measurements, weight and clothing size, writing beside these your desired measurements. From there, on a daily basis you write down everything you eat. And you keep going as long as you like, reviewing your progress.
How easy was the product to use?
"The product was very easy to use, but it is time consuming and tedious having to make notes about your eating behaviour on a daily basis."
Did it work?
I have not lost any weight, although I have not put any on, and that is not bad going over Christmas.
Would you recommend it to others?:
Yes, but only if you are really motivated to lose weight. This diary is a real motivator as long as you are quite keen already. It shames you into eating well and consuming only limited amounts of fat.
The diary also re-enforces the message that the only way to lose weight and maintain any weight loss is to spend the rest of your days eating healthily. If you're not motivated, however, it's easy just to tuck it away on a shelf and forget about it!

FAT MAGNETS Tester's name: Karen Haigh Age: 41 Profession: Admin co-ordinator Name of product: Chitosan (also known as fat magnets) by Holland and Barrett Cost: £17.99 for 120 tablets
Claims: This all-natural product derived from the skeletons of shellfish is thought to attach itself to fat. It is not digested by the body and therefore passes through the body unabsorbed, therefore adding no calories to the diet.
What you have to do: You have to take two tablets twice a day before lunch and evening meal.
Ease of use: Very easy
Did it work?: "Truthfully no - I didn't lose a single pound which is quite disappointing after faithfully taking the tablets every day for so long. I actually think willpower would work far better than these tablets."
Would you recommend it to others?: "No!"
Contacts: Call 02476 244400 for your nearest Holland and Barrett store, order direct from 0870 606 6605 or visit www.hollandandbarrett.com
for an insurance firm Name of product:Slimpatch by slimpatch Cost: £34.95 for a six week course
Claims: You will lose weight by placing a slim patch anywhere on the body every day. The patches release a natural seaplant extract into the skin to stimulate the metabolism, allowing you to lose weight without dieting.
What you have to do: You just have to replace your patch with a new one every day.
Ease of use:"Easy, however they did leave a residue which was impossible to get off and therefore left your body covered in sticky marks! They also look a little like the contraceptive patch and some people noticed it and asked what it was for, which was embarassing!"
Did it work? "I have not lost any weight, but I have not put any on either, which considering we have just been through the festive season is pretty good. I do feel however that if you were on a hard core diet and doing exercise, it would stimulate the body that much more. As part of a calorie controlled diet, I think this might be a useful supplement and a good extra weapon for the dieter! "
Would you recommend it to others? "Only as part of a proper diet - and you could argue that if you're dieting and exercising anyway, do you need to spend all that extra money?"
