Alcohol in pregnancy 'may lower IQ of African children'

Children of African descent may suffer impaired intelligence if their mother drinks even small quantities of alcohol while pregnant, a study has shown.

Researchers in the United States found significantly reduced IQ scores in 10-year-olds exposed to alcohol in the womb during the first six months of pregnancy.

But the trend was only seen in African-American children and did not apply to Caucasian offspring from the same socio-economic background.

Laboratory and animal experiments suggest that genetic factors may partly explain the finding. Doctors have long been aware of the dangers to the foetus of excessive alcohol consumption during pregnancy.

Many experts have now come to the conclusion that no amount of alcohol is safe for mothers-to-be.

They point to behavioural problems, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which may be linked to exposure to alcohol in the womb.

Excessive drinking

Excessive drinking during pregnancy can produce a group of problems, including abnormal facial features and nervous system defects, collectively known as Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS).

The new study was published today in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research.

Researchers analysed data collected as part of the Maternal Health Practices and Child Development Project, an investigation into substance abuse during pregnancy.

A total of 611 women were assessed during each trimester of pregnancy and again with their children at regular intervals.

At the age of 10, the children were given intelligence tests.

Heavy drinking in pregnancy led to a two-to-seven point decrease in IQ among black children, but lesser levels of alcohol use also had an effect.

Dr Jennifer Willford, from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, who led the study, said: "This study found that even light to moderate drinking during pregnancy can affect IQ.

"The effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on IQ were worse for children exposed to alcohol through the second trimester of pregnancy."

Co-author Dr Paul O'Connor, from the University of Washington, warned: "It should not be construed that a child is protected from the damaging effects of prenatal alcohol exposure because of ethnicity. Foetal alcohol spectrum disorders can occur in any ethnic group."
