UN health boss rushed to hospital

WHO chief Lee Jong-wook

Mr Lee will be in hospital for "some time", a WHO spokeswoman said

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) has had emergency surgery for a blood clot on his brain after being suddenly taken ill.

Lee Jong-wook, 61, was rushed to a Geneva hospital on Saturday afternoon, the UN's health agency said.

The South Korean is now recovering from the operation, a spokeswoman said.

The WHO said Mr Lee will be unable to attend the annual meeting of 162 health ministers from around the world that is scheduled to start next week.

Spokeswoman Christine McNab said Mr Lee's absence will not affect the planned meeting.

She said it was too early for doctors to give a prognosis but Mr Lee is expected to remain in hospital for "some time".

Mr Lee became head of the WHO in 2003 and has worked for the body for 23 years.

The WHO's five-day assembly, due to start on Monday, is expected to discuss the global response to the bird flu epidemic as well as whether or not to destroy the world's remaining stocks of the smallpox virus.
