Blood test to spot stress

A simple stress-test gadget could soon unmask those who are failing to cope with the pressures of life.

The device could be used by bosses to find the weakest link in their office or help life insurance companies weed out high-risk customers.

Scientists at Oxford University have developed a simple blood test to measure stress. They say it could soon be available as a hand-held gadget.

The test involves adding a chemical to a drop of blood.

The chemical causes white cells to react to a perceived danger.

If the response is weak, it shows that the individual is already under stress.

Researcher Prof David Macdonald said: "It makes the white blood cells react as if they had been challenged by bacteria.

"If they have been challenged in the immediate past, they are less likely to mount a coping response."

While the test could help more people get treatment for stress, civil liberties groups fear it could be used to discriminate against sufferers.

Stress, often linked to heart disease, is the most common cause of absenteeism, with 270,000 people going sick every day.

Nearly one in ten Britons is affected by the problem and treating it costs the NHS £1billion a year.

Some experts believe the complexity of modern life is responsible.

  Office workers are being struck down by a new stressrelated illness - Pre-Holiday Tension.

  But instead of worrying about what to pack, PHT sufferers fret over finishing outstanding work before they jet away.

  Of 5,000 workers questioned in a survey, nearly one in four said they suffered from stress before a holiday.

  And a third claimed things are worse now than when they took part in a similar study three years ago.

  One in ten is nervous about being made redundant during their annual leave, while only four in ten workers say they will take their full holiday entitlement.

  The average person will work an extra nine hours to get things finished. And some people admitted to having cancelled trips altogether because they had too much to do, according to the survey by recruitment firm reed.co.uk.

  One female IT worker reportedly put in an extra 80 hours to complete a project so that she could go away with a clear conscience.

Half of the people surveyed said they feared something going wrong while they were off.

Reed managing director Dan Ferrandino said: "Cancelling your holiday because the stress at work has become too much is certainly not the answer. The best cure is a week or two relaxing in the sun."

The study recommends tackling PHT by pairing up with a colleague who will deal with your work while you are out of the office. The favour can be returned when it is their turn to take a break.
