Liver

Units Calories Protein Carbo-
hydrates
Fat
Liver (chicken, fried) per 100g 194.00 20.70 3.40 10.90
Liver (calf, fried) per 100g 254.00 26.90 7.30 13.20
Liver (lamb, fried) per 100g 232.00 22.90 3.90 14.00

Pros: The nutrients in liver vary slightly according to which animal the organ has come from, but all are extremely rich in vitamin A, which is required for a healthy immune system, good skin and night vision. Richest is calves' liver, which supplies the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamin A in just one teaspoon. One serving supplies 100 per cent of the RDA for zinc, and virtually all of the daily requirement for iron. Chicken livers provide the richest source of folic acid, with nearly five times the RDA in 100g. And all types of liver provide enough vitamin B12 in one portion to satisfy the body's requirements for a month.

Cons: Pregnant women and women trying to get pregnant should not eat liver or liver products. Although vitamin A is essential for healthy development of the baby, in excess it can cause birth defects. Liver is high in cholesterol, and should thus be avoided in excess by people with high blood pressure and heart problems.
