PDA programs may help smokers quit

Seattle Times staff reporter

They're not much bigger than a pack of cigarettes, so doctors hope smokers who want to quit will reach for them when a nicotine craving hits.

Handheld computers, researchers say, may be one answer to getting people to quit smoking.

"It's much easier to log on to a computer than it would be to go into the doctor's office for an appointment," said Jennifer McClure, an assistant investigator with Group Health's Center for Health Studies. Group Health researchers are studying whether the software they're developing for personal digital assistants will, when used with counseling, nicotine patches and educational materials, equal quitting success.

The PDA software is tailored to each user and includes scheduled inspirational messages. Besides convenience and personalization, it may offer lower cost: no need for weeks or months of counseling appointments or supplies of quitting aids.

Other researchers, too, are working to develop handheld software. On the market now, McClure noted, is a small computerized device that coaches smokers through a gradual quitting schedule. The $90 device, called Lifesign, is available from Reston, Va.-based PICS (www.lifesign.com, or 800-543-3744).

Other companies are developing such high-tech approaches as anti-smoking interactive Web sites and computer games geared toward adolescents.
