Giving your baby the right start in life

Last week I went along to St Mary's Hospital, Paddington, London, to meet Sylvie, Angelica and James' new daughter, for the first time. Having just been breast-fed, there she lay, contented and glowing, with her whole life ahead of her.

Although she was a little light at birth, I'm sure that she'll soon make up for it, especially since Angelica eats so well and should therefore be the source of nutritious milk. All in all, before long I expect Sylvie to be a robust, bouncing baby.

Wherever possible, I'd recommend breast over bottle-feeding because it gives babies such a healthy start in life. There's a fine line between feeding your baby enough to sustain a normal growth pattern and overfeeding, however, because babies who gain too much weight during the first four months of their lives could be heading for a lifetime of obesity, according to Dr Nicholas Stettler, the co-author of a report that was recently published in The American Journal of Pediatrics, giving the conclusions of the largest-ever study into infant weight gain.

The study, which tracked the progress of 30,000 children from birth, concluded that for each increase in weight of 100g per month above the expected average of 700g, the risk of becoming overweight increased by 30 per cent.

The reason why paediatricians are worried about babies gaining too much weight is that it's increasingly common for children to become overweight very early on in life, which in turn exposes them to a higher risk of developing diabetes, heart disease and joint problems.

Indeed, almost one in ten children under the age of four is now classified obese, in the UK, almost double the figure roughly a decade ago.

But I don't want this research to panic Angelica, or any other new parent, into thinking that they need to feed their babies less than the amount currently recommended by dieticians, midwives, doctors and other experts, either by ignoring a baby's hunger signals, diluting formula milk for bottle-fed babies, or, in the case of breast-feeding mothers, going on a low- calorie diet.

Babies need all of the vitamins, minerals, fat and protein that milk provides, and if you muck around with its natural formulation, you'll be putting your baby's health at risk.

What this research does highlight, however, is that mothers may be justified in standing up to know-it-all relatives who insist that the chubbier the baby, the healthier it is, because this may not be the case.

If your baby's weight is consistently rising above the recommended levels (which can be tracked on a percentile growth chart), you should take it seriously and make time to discuss your feeding schedule with your health-care team - it may be that you've been feeding on demand too often, for example.

It would be a shame to set your child up for a lifetime of dieting when a few adjustments can easily be made at this stage.

Looking ahead, once your child starts school and becomes exposed other people's eating habits, it's important not to turn your healthy-eating ideals into a battleground. For instance, although overly sweet foods provide a large supply of needless calories, I think it best not to ban all confectionery from passing your child's lips, which could not only make them feel left out, but prompt them to gorge on the forbidden foods in secret.

The best way forward is to encourage them to eat sweet foods that have nutritional value: vitamin-and- mineral-rich dried fruits, for instance, or some mouth-watering fresh fruits, such as slices of mango or pineapple, or else my Bramley apple and apricot crumble (see below), which, because it has a wholegrain oat topping, contains so much fibre that just a small bowl will fill them up.

And when it comes to chocolate bars and the like, letting them have a sugary treat of their own choice, however much you disapprove of it, once a week - perhaps after school on Friday - should make them feel less hard done by.
