Sweeteners on the X Factor Diet

All sweeteners apart from stevia and sucralose are banned on the X Factor Diet. Here is a guide to both sweeteners and details of how to obtain them.

Stevia comes from a South American plant and is 10 to 15 times sweeter than common table sugar. The plant is readily available in health food stores in many countries and has been used widely in Japan for decades. It is not available in the UK, but can be ordered from the address or website below and will be sent by airmail. It comes as a clear liquid extract in distilled water, powdered stevia leaf, as full strength (very sweet) stevioside extract. In shaker form you can use stevia as you would sugar to sprinkle on foods and drinks. It even comes in tiny single serving packets which you can carry around with you in your pocket or handbag.

To order contact: Stevita Company, 7650 US Hwy.287#100, Arlington, Texas 76001, USA. Tel +(1) 817 483 0044. Fax +(1) 817 478 8891. Website: www.stevitastevia.com

Sucralose is a sweetener which has been on the market in Canada for more than a decade and which is available in a sprinkle-on form called Splenda. It is about 600 times sweeter than sugar and is derived from the sucrose molecule itself. What technicians have done is replace two of the parts of the sucrose molecules - with chlorine molecules. This manipulation of the sugar molecule not only enhances its sweetness dramatically, it also makes the sucrose molecule unrecognisable to your body's metabolic machinery. In other words it is not broken down and absorbed as sugar is. So you perceive a sweet taste while you eat it, but your body can't absorb it. This means that Splenda does not cause the rise in blood sugar and insulin. Splenda should be available in good health food shops and supermarket shelves in the baking section.
