Peer group pressure

 Few things are more frustrating for proud parents than to see their intelligent, unique offspring imitating their (obviously) less worthy pals.

'Don't pay any attention to what they think' you urge as your son refuses to wear the sandals you bought him in case his friends think they're 'poncy' or your daughter badmouths one of her old mates just because everyone else does.

Why peers are important

Whatever you think about peer group pressure you have to remember that to your child, friends matter. They are a vital way of getting through school. And while peer pressure might be the reason for your child trying their first cigarette or can of lager, it can also be invaluable in teaching them life skills and a sense of loyalty and leadership.

How to counterbalance the negative

Reduce the chances of your children picking up bad habits from others by encouraging them to be independent and think for themselves. You can do this by asking for and listening to their opinions and letting them know they are important. Work on his or her social skills. If you think your child might feel awkward in certain social settings practise them at home with them. Keep the lines of communication open so that your child knows he or she can come to you for advice on any subject without being judged.

 

Principle versus popularity

To you it may be just common sense to make your daughter wear the Pac-a-mac you bought her when it's pouring with rain. To your daughter, however, it's a public humiliation she'll remember for a long time. Don't forget that appearances do matter. Most children want to fit in and clothing, footwear and hairstyles are a major part of this. Don't ridicule or belittle them for wanting to conform. Remember Bay City Roller trousers and silky polos? Enough said.
