Child obesity has 'doubled in 10 years'

A leading health chief has warned the UK faces a "public health timetomb" after new figures revealed child obesity has doubled in 10 years.

Professor Colin Waine, chairman of the National Obesity Forum, said children who are obese aged 11 to 15 are twice as likely to die when they are 50.

"This is serious news because obesity in adolescence is associated with the premature onset of Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases," he said.

"We are in danger of raising a generation of people who have a shorter life expectancy than their parents.

"This is a public health timebomb as these children move into adult life."

Around one in four 11 to 15-year-olds is now considered obese. Between 1995 and 2004, the number of obese children increased from 14 per cent to 24 per cent for boys and from 15 per cent to 26 per cent for girls.

Professor Waine also warned that obese adolescents had an increased risk of cancer. He blamed increased inactivitiy coupled with energy dense foods for fuelling the crisis.

The annual Health Survey for England 2004 also found one in four adults is now considered obese.

I believe that it is the parents responsibility. How parents can blame a product, company or even the government for their childs bad health astounds me but as with human nature it is a lot more convenient to push the blame on to somebody in order to make themselves feel exculpated. It is called fast and convenient food for a reason.

I believe it is the parents responsibility. How a parent can blame a product,a company or even the goverment for their childs bad health astounds me. It seems to me it is much more convenient for parents to push the blame it on someone else than it is for them to take the responsitbility themselves. It is called fast and convenient food for a reason.

On the subject of obese children. I believe its the responsibility of the parents to instill in their children the importance of healthy food and exercise, and then hopefully the children will respond and adopt a sensible approach for a healthy life. My eldest plays cricket and it takes him an hour there and back to go to work 5 days a week on his bicycle. My other son plays cricket and football and my daughter swims twice a week. They all drink lots of water and eat lots of healthy food. Admittedly they eat junk food now and then but I feel overall they eat healthily.
