Atkins diet 'can risk your life'

Your support of us and our advertisers and your valuable encouragement are very much appreciated.

People who strictly follow the Atkins diet could develop a potentially fatal blood disorder, doctors say.

A medical team described how one 40-year-old woman developed the dangerous condition after cutting out carbohydrates and living on meat, cheese and salads for a month.

The obese woman, who had lost nine kilograms, was taken to casualty after vomiting up to six times a day and feeling increasingly short of breath.

She was diagnosed as having ketoacidosis, where dangerous levels of acids had built up in the blood and was placed in an intensive care unit.

The woman had rigorously followed the Atkins diet, which claims to produce rapid weight loss, and taken the recommended precautions, including using vitamins and other supplements.

She was discharged after four days in February 2004.

Atkins 'far from healthy'

Doctors reported the case study in The Lancet medical journal.

Team leader Professor Klaus-Dieter Lessnau, from the New York School of Medicine, wrote: "Our patient had an underlying ketosis caused by the Atkins diet. This problem may become more recognised because this diet is becoming increasingly popular worldwide."

Dr Lyn Steffen and Ms Jennifer Nettleton, from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health said: "Low carbohydrate diets for weight management are far from healthy, given their association with ketosis, constipation or diarrhoea, halitosis, headache, and general fatigue to name a few side effects."

They warned the low carb diets fell short of "indisputable safety."

Don't people realise by now that diets don't work - and in cases as extreme as this can be very harmful? The best way to eat is eating when you are hungry and stopping when you are satisfied, and of course being active everyday, doing the things you love.

- Caity, Isleworth, UK

I followed the atkins diet stricly and experienced headaches and lack of energy for 7 days when I was ready to give up. On day 8 I woke up feeling great and carried on to lose all the weight I wanted, reduced body fat from 25% to 15% (included excercise) and look and feel great. When I told my practice nurse how I had lowered my cholesterol from 7.4 to 5.2 on a diet of bacon, eggs chicken, fish etc. she nearly threw me out of the surgery!

- Neil, Liverpool UK

As much as I love carbs, I have come to know that they are poison to my body. After losing 85 lbs I thought I could start eating as I did before - and found out that I cannot. Low carb is not a diet, it is an eating plan for life, with moderate carbs daily.

- Cheryl Ann Miller, Chattanooga, TN
